But will treat them before training starts n then go with gut feeling during race season.
Thanks for your wise words everyone. Some really good points made that I’ll take on board and digest. As goose1 has commented, I’ve also noticed this year just how different the approach seems to be between sprint and distance, although obviously with some main consistencies. At heart I’m realising more and more that distance racing is what suits me, but I do also want to be competitive inland too. Hopefully as I get more practice I’ll find the right approach for both, but it sounds like I’ll be building another loft next year!

Great thread Neil.
With regard to your measured feeding - what is the starting point you work from - ie do you weigh the actual birds at the start of racing or does your pre season build-up strip them of any fat to start with.
For various reasons I still breed from most my racers, would that make my pre season build up different to yours.

Normally I pair around 1st week in February the racers all rear so get a protein mix much of March, once the babies are weaned the racers then do get a lot of barley but never measured, about a fortnight before Dunbar 268 to me the amount of barley is drastically reduced. In between longer race I might sometimes feed 100% barley for 1 or 2 days if I think they need sharpening up. Personally I don’t think you can beat barley for keeping their digestion right.NeilA wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 2:22 pm Interested to see if Goose and Steve feed a lot of barley April early May for there distance pigeons or a bit more protein

My birds have never looked so well.MIke Lycett wrote: Tue Dec 23, 2025 5:43 pm If any onlooker has learnt anything from various threads the last few months hopefully its the value of barley in the diet
