The young lad I am helping to start up has had a problem with young birds dying soon after they have hatched.
He has had 1 round which were reared ok but has had 2 nest in his 2nd round where the babies have died 3/4 days after hatching. Both nests died within 4 days of each other.
I'm guessing it's not just a random thing and likely that there is something underlying.
Anyone experienced this or got any ideas please.
I have told him first thing to do is to get the droppings of the parents tested

Hi Dave I had this issue 3 years ago and the problem turned out to be the nest felts, so the first thing is do if using them is get rid or buy some new ones. After that it’s likely to be an e-coil or Paratyphus issue.

Going back a few year's ago that there was a problem with a batch of nest felts think it was Les Parkinson who was saying about it back then in the BHW. I brought in some stock about 3 year's ago when the young hatched out they were fed by the parents for about 4 day's then both parents stopped feeding the ybs & just left them to dye in the nest, they done this over both nest's needless to say they are not here anymore. As a precaution Dave jmo I would have used Salgen on the parents before breeding started just to minimise the risk of Salmonella & done the chicks 1 drop into the mouth as well a few day's after hatching . I hope Will gets it sorted out soon.

You may sort the problem this Yr but now it's over for breeding racers this season
Are these gift birds of local lofts because if the locals have used this young lad as a ashtray giving him all there old shite they don't want to cull ,the easy answer is go in loft fill a sack up with em all dead ,clean loft in bleach n burn it out with gun n start on the right foot instead of the wrong one ,

I know where your coming from Ant because that's what we got when my lad started all it got us was paratyphoid.
But this lad has been very fortunate and has received birds from the best fanciers in the fed. I advised him who best to accept birds from and he has been very lucky.

Thanks for reply Steve - he hasn't used nest felts he does a bit of work on a few local farms and has an abundant supply of barley straw and hay etc.

I'd be surprised if it were down to the health of the parents.

Ferals in town can bring up youngsters successfully being fed on nothing much more than scrappings of Steak Bake from Gregg's and a packet of Quavers
 so true Mike and theres nothing wrong with a Greg's steak bake 😋

My club mate had this it they were fine in the nest then a couple hours later dead I don’t think from memory he was getting them past 14 days mostly dead about 3-7 days
He had them tested I think abroad from memory
Got meds and a vaccine it was a lengthy treatment
He’s not had the problem since though

I’m sure it was a ecoli thing

Cheers Neil - appreciate the reply mate.
One pair died 3 -4 days of hatching and yes the other pair was 7 days.
I have advised him to get the parents tested.

Cheers Dave I've never heard of Salgen. For me personally, I tried to prepare my own birds following guidelines from the guys on here and this is the first time I've heard of that product. Maybe I didn't attend school on that day
