I would think what your using at the moment with the quill product & the 3 organic acid in them should help over a period of time.
The use of garlic & oregano oil should provide or be good for how the pigeons gut is working, any good bacteria you can introduce & be beneficial must be a good thing.
Coming up to breeding I normally use Pro gut on the feed, great for the droppings when yb are in the nest also. With Coccidiosis well then you probably need to be on top of cleaning loft floor's & perches definitely torch the floor Neil to kill any eggs & break the cycle, if your medicating then a probiotic/ natural yoghurt with cinnamon would help to restore the guts good bacteria again.
Ways to reduce need for antibiotics

Yes I've used the poultry spice as well, I like cinnamon on the feed if I use oregano oil as I think it's good for the gut lining & cinnamon for canker. I also like the gemthpax & Strike on the feed.

I use avidress most days, I find yellow drops good during the season. I use a microscope so only worm as and when necessary. During racing if I think there’s a respiratory issue then I have no hesitation in treating with an AB, I don’t believe in natural cures as such. Cocci is an interesting one, I’ve never managed to get them 100% cocci free, even after a treatment with baycox. Amprolum is a good treatment it works buy stopping cocci taking up Vitamin B1, years ago they used to add it to growers pellets but it’s no longer allowed.NeilA wrote: Fri Oct 24, 2025 9:01 am I use as does King Iodine for canker and fungus
I like to reduce the PH in the water also
What other ways do members reduce or suppress the common things like canker / respo / worms / cocci or any others without the need for a treatment or antibiotic
Do probiotics help against cocci ? I have never used them but that’s one example I would be interested in learning about

I’ve read that Mike never dared do it. At what rate do you add it?MIke Lycett wrote: Sat Oct 25, 2025 8:14 amNeilA wrote: Fri Oct 24, 2025 9:01 am I use as does King Iodine for canker and fungus

I think Virkon S is as good a shout as anything Neil
When buying the Quill boost I had a look through their other products and noticed they sell a couple of water sanitisers that contain 5% hydrogen peroxide and can be added to the drinking water. Apparently kill bacteria, viruses, Fungi. They did sound good although obviously the hydrogen peroxide will kill good bacteria too. What's peoples thoughts on this?

Morning Mike, What's the dosage per litre you'd advise for the drinker please.MIke Lycett wrote: Sat Oct 25, 2025 8:14 amNeilA wrote: Fri Oct 24, 2025 9:01 am I use as does King Iodine for canker and fungus

Yep that was exactly my thoughts. I'd be buying something else to undo the damage I'd just done so to speak.MIke Lycett wrote: Sat Oct 25, 2025 9:44 am I'd be a little concerned about it killing the good bacteria because then you'd need another product say like Entrobac of Rohnfried (for example) to regenerate the intestinal flora
The vet I use always checks the gut balance which I always find interesting

Brilliant thanks for the information MikeMIke Lycett wrote: Sat Oct 25, 2025 8:59 am Hi Steve
1 heaped teaspoon to 10 litres
So if you aren't using 10 litres just scale down accordingly (you don't have to be exact really)
Just add the Virkon in last and stir gently. If you add it 1st it froths like crazy
I find it strange that fanciers don't trust Tap water (after all they drink it themselves) Why would you need to clean again, clean water? ALL sanitisers/bleach KILL will kill bacteria, good & bad. and Virkon S is a bleach NOT a sanitiser. The makers state NOT to be used for drinking water. (they make a sanitiser version for this)goose1 wrote: Sat Oct 25, 2025 9:34 am When buying the Quill boost I had a look through their other products and noticed they sell a couple of water sanitisers that contain 5% hydrogen peroxide and can be added to the drinking water. Why would fanciers first KILL ALL the good & bad intestinal flora at the start of the week and then use a product to help promote it the end of the week. Week after week?
I have NEVER used bleach in the birds water.
Completely agree, if your drinkers are kept clean there should be no need to add any sterilising agent at home.
Imo it’s vital to sanitise the water system on the transporter both storage and supply, pipes and troughs as that is where water borne pathogens are most likely to occur.
Like King, I can’t for the life of me understand why people add bleach to their drinkers, would you drink water with bleach added yourself?
