A few weeks back I borrowed a hen from David Cox to pair up with the White flight Thone" He gave me a very nice blue bar hen, It's a half sister to the Trillian, but by a Janssen cock so she's pure inbred Janssen.
She laid quickly but only hatched one, it's a strong youngster.
Funny thing, I was putting the feed in the trays to feed them in the sputnik, and they were all climbing in and messing about. I was giving a pat to this one and that one, and ran my hand over the Zillzie Baby, as she's called. She looked up at me and went back to eating. That doesn't sound like much, but she's a late breed from 2 years ago, never been trained, never been handled, and was very wild when I bought her home. That was very satisfying.
Oh, and David said to me he's got another hen from the same pair so I'd better keep it.

We were told we were going to get 41 or 42 degrees and hot strong winds and thunderstorms. It's very dry and that is a little bit scary. I was up at 6 am and had the pigeon hampers outside the shed, the cat cages ready and both the cars unlocked. I opened the gate and had all the hoses attached to the taps.
In the end, it got to 38sh, cloudy and a wind that kept it from becoming a furnace. So I count that as a win.
At 6.30 its still 37 degrees, but the pigeons are fine. The ventilation through the back wall vent at the floor works very well. Yes, it's hot. But it's only for one day and then we we are back to bearable temperatures.
The birds cope well.

If you look at the nest box front, you will see two twist ties hanging there. That means those youngsters are the second round. When they hatch I record it in the book and give them ring numbers. I put the rings in a twist tie and put them on the front. When I put them on the babies I usually just stick the tie back on the front.
