Not sure if that would work Neil when you have 20 odd birds wanting to trap all at the same time.
I am happy with my sputniks and my training routines and its not so important for me to time every bird from every toss.
In the summer when it's warm and her indoors is in the garden is the only time I can leave them open.

I think baby's the more you train the better but old birds after 1st or 2nd race shouldn't really need tossing unless it's a part of ya system or birds loft fly poorly ,,if ya flying natural I understand but I think the less you train old birds now the better with the hawk n falcon situation.

Sorry if my reply seemed a bit nonchalant. I am always grateful for any suggestions that might get me that bit closer to the top table but I seem to have accepted some of the constraints I have rather than consider an alternative.

Birds were hit today training I didn't see it ,but on ets 90 percent together and others like drips of blood one with center tail missing gash up belly ,,
Still 2 missing

I couldnt leave my traps open like that Neil. If I go training I have to get em in when I get home but my problem is cats.
If I get caught in a traffic jam or something they have to stay out. Think the odds are better with a sparrow hawk than with a cat getting in.

The problem for me, is, that if you go training and your birds get home and can't get back into the loft until you're home, then the message you're sending them is "Why bother rushing home - I can't get inside anyway"

Cheers Mike, I can see what you all are saying and it makes perfect sense but with 4 cats as immediate neighbours there's not much I can do about it. Unless anyone can offer an alternative I just darent leave the traps open. I regularly wake up to find a cat sitting on top the loft.
I have had birds 2 birds punctured cos the perches were too near the dowelled front. Slight design fault but that was easily rectified as soon as I realised what was happening.
My latest defence is I cover the landing boards on the sputniks with mouse traps at night so if they jump up they get a bit of a surprise.

Is it worth trying to Cover the landing boards with a slope so they can’t get on them Dave so you can lift it off for when you want

Although I would still go for a weighted trap if I’m honest use the Sputnik as often as you can but have a late comers option that you can use when your wife isn’t around
I know your not keen but to be honest the thought of birds coming home to be shit out I can’t get my head around

Thanks Neil, yes a sloped board would save me setting all the mouse traps for sure but I am really trying to scare them into not coming back.
It's not that I am not keen on the weighted trap. I just can't visualise 22 birds all coming from a training chuck and hitting it at the same time.
With the emphasis you have all put on the importance of this detail, I cant ignore your advice and I will do as you do Neil and take a chance on leaving the trap open. I am usually back before them and often only 5 or 10 mins behind them so I guess the chances are negligable. - just need to grow a bigger pair

They won’t all hit the weighted board but surely it’s better that they wait there turn to get in rather than be shut out
It might actually have a positive effect

Plus your only into the longer races

That or just ++++++ them or catch them and move them on
Your pigeons will never be happy with all that going on

Or just get a dog out there why birds are out
