We used VL for over 30 years with no issues (except the price) although we never had single grains from them tbh I didn’t know they sold barley ours came from a local farm germination can take anywhere from 2 to 7 days depending on moisture and temperature regarding the maize if you were unhappy with it you should have taken it back
