From my experience with it I think it unlikely you’d have carries but go the year round with no symptoms. It’s such an insidious disease, even in an outbreak the majority of birds seem ok it just works its way through them slowly. When I had it in the Autumn of ( 88 I think) they recovered and looked fine. The following breeding season not 1 single youngster from the 8 pairs survived.NeilA wrote: Tue Oct 14, 2025 6:50 amIs it possible to have carriers and it never break out to a full blown issue in the loft or if you have carriers does it always come out in the teamMIke Lycett wrote: Mon Oct 13, 2025 1:55 pm When I was racing I never ever treated for Paratyphoid
A friend messaged me this morning, and he's never treated for it before either - but is now considering it
What's people's thoughts on the positives/negatives of this?
I mean could say someone have 10 carriers but no visible problems so they would still be racing but maybe just behind each week

Would I be right in saying this is one of the biggest problems encountered by pigeon fancier's. Mixed in race baskets & contact with lots of transferable diseases by water, food, all standing in waste droppings etc, can't be good maybe this is a silent killer of lost form in racing pigeons today undetectable with carriers on transporter, just my opinion.
Mine have had Salgen vaccine they have had 2 doses earlier just to try to build up some resistance/ antibodies, more peace of mind that I've tried to be proactive.

Either your birds have Paratyphoid or they don't.
Pre treating BEFORE vaccination will clear them ready for vaccination. Just pre-treating will do NOTHING to prevent Paratyphoid infection.
Once vaccinated they birds CAN still catch Paratyphoid, as vaccines ONLY help infected birds recover.

The vets say every loft as there carriers ,MIke Lycett wrote: Tue Oct 14, 2025 2:26 pm Could you expand please Tony?
I’m a virgin with Paratyphoid
Hence why i started the topic
My dad borrowed a hen was healthy in its own environment put in my dad's loft all he's got parathyroid yet this one looked OK then we found out that the man had parathyroid n streptococci previously years before so I won't take risks ever ,,iv bought birds in I gey gut instinct no matter cost there in ferret box ,,lads laugh come here u see the ferret main diet is pigeon
I ain't attached to pigeons there here to race ,
I see these lofts they say they never treat n never do this but they keep pigeons for years and do same thing Yr in Yr same results there birds go in other lofts do exactly same look good don't get sick but win very little,
My opinion find the snipers in the flock with parathyroid n cull them out straight away not keep them because they look ok n act ok .

Think the vet on topic explains it but most ignore it because it's against there belief and personally think there frightened of out come sometimes .
Ant if your birds DON'T have Paratyphoid, What is it that you are treating the birds for? You CAN'T treat for something the birds DON'T have.Anthony webster wrote: Tue Oct 14, 2025 2:00 pmI disagree massively with youking wrote: Tue Oct 14, 2025 1:53 pm Either your birds have Paratyphoid or they don't.

If you listen to vet by treating your keeping the parathyroid at a level .king wrote: Tue Oct 14, 2025 3:33 pmAnt if your birds DON'T have Paratyphoid, What is it that you are treating the birds for?
