Hi Dave
Yea just get yourself some tablets salt put it in a pot without a lid, and have a look at it 48 hours later, that will tell you all. If it doesn't come out of the pot like it did, there would be a humidity issue in your loft.
I couldn't answer about sand as I've never used it.

Totally agree.Wiley wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 12:18 pm Regarding grit, I'm very fussy with grits. The birds get one teaspoon of red stone everyday, they will eat this with relish.Tip I got from Leo Heremans
Oyster shell and all that likes is a waste of time, they just flick it about.
Matrix is great but take the aniseed away and it's not as flavoursome to them.
Little and often and refreshed daily, bang on.
I give a little fresh daily.

Wiley, where I live in Australia for most of the year it's very dry, humidity is the least of the worries.
However we had a very wet winter and I had to close all the back wall vents to keep the damp breezes blowing though and put dry pine shavings on the floor to try and keep it dry.
Now, as quick as that everything is bone dry again.
I hate a damp loft.

Hey Wiley, well my loft has passed the "salt test"Wiley wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 6:49 pm Hi Dave

but I have to ask if that is influenced by the weather which has fairly warm and dry of late (bloody cold today mind)
Should I do it again when it is damp and wet or would you be happy with the result of this one test...
Cheers mate.
I would be happy with the result pal.Diamond Dave wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2026 5:14 pmHey Wiley, well my loft has passed the "salt test"Wiley wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 6:49 pm Hi Dave

Yes it will be influenced by the weather Dave. Your loft may pass the test one day and fail it on another. Do the test again on a day when it's raining and see if you passDiamond Dave wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2026 5:14 pmHey Wiley, well my loft has passed the "salt test"Wiley wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 6:49 pm Hi Dave

I've a hydrometer in my main loft. My loft has lots of air flowing though it, even on days of high humidity the loft stays dry.
