My race team for next year will consist of 12 widowhood cocks. One third, 4 cocks, retained from this years old bird racing, 4 latebred cocks from 2025 who either had the odd old bird race or raced with the youngsters, or both, and 4 young cocks from this years young birds. I don’t breed many youngsters and didn’t lose many so have plenty to choose from. A team of 12 cocks that could race the whole old bird program is enough for me. I don’t worry about competing against fanciers who send large teams, all helps keep the costs down. We can send upwards of 500 in our club and 2,500 in the 3Cs.

I say 4 retained from my old bird team. These are the 4 best cocks from this years old bird racing. 3 others flew all 14 races but ones 6 years old, another 5 and a 3 year old who was on the day but back late most weeks. These 3 will be kept as feeders and are being replaced with younger birds. The 2 older ones have both flown over 50 races each and have flown the channel in the past.
