Time is moving on
When i was breeding youngsters, yes i would sell some for the up keep of the loft. Besides Nutrition feeds for the birds, I always had backup money to buy new stock birds if needed. It was not a money making process, but i am happy to say. When i had to finish in the sport, my birds were sold to give me my returns of spending.
Surely there’s a world of difference between selling a few birds to help with the feed bill and a business employing 10 people over 3 sites having a contract to sell lots of ybs a year isn’t there or is it me?Devo1956 wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 12:40 pm When i was breeding youngsters, yes i would sell some for the up keep of the loft. To be honest, there is different shows around the world. That people flock too, to buy products or birds. That is their choice, on how they want to spend their cash. Some people can not go to the shows, so they use the internet for auctions. In this moving world there will always be a choice, so if some people want to breed a round of youngster to sell. Go ahead and do it, it pays bills.Bowbroom wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 1:46 pmSurely there’s a world of difference between selling a few birds to help with the feed bill and a business employing 10 people over 3 sites having a contract to sell lots of ybs a year isn’t there or is it me?Devo1956 wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 12:40 pm When i was breeding youngsters, yes i would sell some for the up keep of the loft. What do you mean you'll take it at face value? And I'm honoured you'll put me in that rankDevo1956 wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 9:18 amWell Goose1, I would have to take that as face value. But go on i will put you up in that rank, I have been on a visit to the Spieker loft. So i know how hard Leon and his Dad works. They had a great season this year, and i chat with Leon daily. His words it could have been better, they are already working on preparing better. Danny also fits into this rank on work rate, long hours carrrying out all tasks at a racing stud loft. Also taking care of his family, so there you go. I feel you all do so well in the sport. It was rather late for me to reply last night, as i had a few hours at the hospital going through lung tests. But it was a good to chat.goose1 wrote: Wed Sep 09, 2026 11:56 pmWell okay then I guarantee you nobody on this site works harder or sacrifices more to be successful with their pigeons than me. There may be lads who work equally as hard I know there is, but nobody harder. And I don't receive a wage for my efforts. I go to work 7 double day shifts there not many days im in bed after 4am so where do you rank that?Devo1956 wrote: Wed Sep 09, 2026 11:42 pm
I am on about the members that post on the site, and you are pointing out about other flyers. But we could go on about this, and we would still differ on our views. I think what is important, we all have different views.
That is what keeps the sport alive, and so it should.
I notice the topic has moved on to selling. Again you can't compare a stud, where regardless if they race or not they are still geared towards selling a lot of pigeons in a season. Against a racing loft who will sell a few each season. Some people maybe don't even advertise but are approached to sell. For example our first round (which isn't a big round 32/34 will be max) for the last 2 seasons has been sold because 2 separate lads approached us to do so. But whether you like it or not Bowbroom is totally right with what he says, there are two types of fancier, he hasn't actually said who falls into which but the fact he states is true.
Goose 1, that was a bit of banter. but if you feel that way, i can only apologise.goose1 wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 2:40 pmWhat do you mean you'll take it at face value? Don't insult me or anybody else because if some of the members on this site (some who don't post and some who do) put their results up over their racing careers they would put these two to shame so show some respect and don't try to make out like these two are working harder than anyone else and again nothing against the two lads they haven't said anything.

Does it really matter or make any differenceBowbroom wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 1:46 pmSurely there’s a world of difference between selling a few birds to help with the feed bill and a business employing 10 people over 3 sites having a contract to sell lots of ybs a year isn’t there or is it me?Devo1956 wrote: Thu Sep 10, 2026 12:40 pm When i was breeding youngsters, yes i would sell some for the up keep of the loft. Sadies Lofts home of decent birds just a useless loft manager, and now a confirmed loser but proud

I have to agree with both Bowbroom and Goose on this. There is a world of difference between those employing people to do the work and those doing it as a hobby. If you need to employ people you are running a business and wages have to be paid. The Labour bill for 10 employees must be very high, I employ 2 part timers in my shop and that costs enough. You must have to sell a lot of pigeons to pay that bill without all the other costs.
I would get no pleasure out of having to employ people so that I could race pigeons. It’s the same as OLRs. I would have no interest in putting pigeons in a OLR and having someone else looking after them.
I have a small back garden loft and race a small team. I only have around 30 minutes a day to spend on my pigeons as I work 6 days a week and can’t even see my birds back most weeks. But even though I was only racing 7 widowhood cocks they were still holding their own against lofts sending a lot more and against 2,500+ birds a week. I don’t buy pigeons in as I don’t feel the need.
