Evening all,

Well, the first old bird race of the season is in the books, and let’s just say it was a massive reality check for me. We had our first go with the new Studley Road Flying Club (Tamworth Fed) from Bath on Saturday, and while the club setup is looking top-notch, my own performance was anything but.
The Reality Check
The birds were up at 08:45, and with the winners doing over 1700 ypm, it was a fast, clean race for those who were ready. I sat there watching batches of 50+ birds screaming over the garden at 09:50, but nothing broke.

The silence that followed was deafening.

First Bird: 14:34 (nearly 6 hours after liberation)
Second Bird: 17:48
Third Bird: 18:51
Returns: 3 home, 2 still missing.

Where I Went Wrong
Standing in an empty garden for hours gives you plenty of time to be honest with yourself. I went into this season on "hope" rather than preparation. I’d only given them four training tosses and some decent loft flying, thinking that would be enough to get them through a short blow from Bath.
I was wrong. This game has a way of humbling you the second you cut corners.

The Plan Forward
The only positive is that the birds that did make it back haven't "folded"—they still look lively and healthy, they just lacked the sharpness to compete. The lessons are clear:
* They need more road.
* They need a proper routine.
* I need to stop being lazy with the training basket.

We aren't easing into the season anymore; we’re right in the thick of it. I’ve got a lot of work to do this week to make sure I’m not just waiting for "perch fillers" next Saturday.

Hope the rest of you had a better start than I did!
Cheers.

I'm unsure if it stems from me having a very small. Like I said I sent 5 birds to the race, but they do alright at home, but I wouldn't say they are setting the skies alight!

When flying cocks/hens separately I'm flying 2 or 3 birds at a time and it doesn't seem they want to fly in the small group!

Love the honesty mate - I'm sure the guys on here will help you over it.
The only help I can offer is simply to confirm that this game is far from easy and that you're not the only one who has taken things for granted.
Just like to add that I like what you've done for the sport and wish you well going forward

I'm not sure if it's liberation is from the race course or the Walcott street rugby club very high up on both & never easy to come out of .
Fitness & health is probably key + hours on the wing at home & basket road work & a definite regular routine if the above isn't there then I think you will struggle. All I can say Winfort is I hope you can change things with some constructive advice from others on the forum.
Best of luck I hope you have a change of fortune.

Can you see them
Do they race straight across your garden
Are they high or roof height
Visibility from my garden is very limited. My home/garden runs perpendicular to the road, and the gradient drops of very steeply, so much that the end of my garden is already roof height!

They will frequently fly between the houses and dart just over the rooftops too.

Not too sure what I am doing for the sport but appreciate the comments!

As for the honesty, I have to be, the only way I can see to get better is to be honest to myself! If that means I have to face some hard truths then that's clearly what I need to do!

I agree with the idea that I haven't done enough beforehand!

Getting a stable routine in my line of work is the easiest, but my shifts have been stable for a month or so now, so that's something I am working on!

Matt - Did you play cautious at the weekend sending 5 or is that all the OB you had? If so where did all last year's YB and previous OB go to?

If you've only got 3 OB now then for me you're literally wasting your time and effort (in my honest opinion)

If you've only got 3 OB (and I'm guessing that maybe they aren't "proven racers") then I'd take what is, to me, a sensible decision and put my time, effort and energies into this year's YB and try to get a team established to carry you forward on a firmer footing for next time
In short I sent the 5 I had left.

I lost perhaps my best racing cock in the final race last year, and dropped a couple more around the loft this season loft flying due to the sparrow hawk! 😭

I don't have a huge loft unfortunately, a very modest 12'x6', split into two sections for old birds and young birds.

I only had the young bird from last year and a handful of stock prisoners.
