I tend to avoid training under 12 degrees and east winds early in the season although avoiding east winds isn’t easy these days
I know some good fanciers that don’t care if it’s colder to train and still win
I am going to struggle to train between the 23rd of March and around the 5th of April apart from the weekend due to work so looking for advice maybe I am to careful
It’s just what I have always tried to do
Do members have any views on when they would or wouldn’t train
Temperature and training

Normally for me it's 2 weeks before first race ,if its bit cold it's very short tosses if it's warmer I train out 20 30 miles if I get 4 tosses I'm OK if I get 12,14 tosses I'm over the moon ,,
Most important for me is how they loft fly and handle ,,
Training is just refreshing there head
Yrs ago I go every hour on first day training 1 mile small bit food hour later same from early until dark I wasn't home but pigeon man down rd called in said the whole team went through 4ft window together,,
For me it's getting them leaving liberation fast n straight n then trapping fast ,,training ain't about fitness they should be fit before training my opinion.

I was a bit fussy too Neil
With the sprinters I never trained them in damp/wet conditions regardless of the temperature, and if it were below 10 degrees they never went either

How many would you think my yearlings would need they only had one race due to circumstances although probably 30 trainers around the 18 -22 mile markAnthony webster wrote: Fri Mar 13, 2026 5:34 am Normally for me it's 2 weeks before first race ,if its bit cold it's very short tosses if it's warmer I train out 20 30 miles if I get 4 tosses I'm OK if I get 12,14 tosses I'm over the moon ,,

With the sprinters, even during the season if it were 20 degrees but damp/rain then I'd refuse to let them out.
I was a bit OCD in that regard

One of the data points that I am tracking with my LoftBuddy app.
I am tracking temperature, humidity and general weather conditions, trying the map out which birds of mine suit different conditions I guess, but will also build an overall weather profile for when best to train them to get the best results!

I'd suggest its not the volume but the quality of the work that they get that's the most important thing
I'd be looking for around 15 or so tosses at a max of 30 miles
