Cocci egg count

Neil...the count of eggs is gauged after using whats called a mc master slide ...(whats seen under microscope is then x50)....google mc master slide for pics....think it was ant last week who said some readings are given as just high or low...thats because it just scored on a floatation based reding....

Neil...first...i think the count you have is based on the Mc Master slide (my opinion) so not sure what is classed good/bad by number...second... I remember vet telling me of the experiment he did ....he kept bird's in a cage's and treated for cocci till readings were nill...then re checked some weeks later bird's still confined....result cocci back again maybe thats why they just advise to keep count low...

Neil mine was 1700 so I wouldn't be that concerned with yours.
AI say's up to 3000 is classified as low so I'm not sure .

Anyone know the levels of cocci eggs that are low or high
I’m waiting for the paper work but I’m sure the chap said on the phone they are just under 300 so no treatment


Just wondered what people thought was low mid high for a count as the internet doesn’t seem to agree when I have searched

A count of 300 is nothing, JMO but just one test to gauge the cocci count is a waste of time, during the racing season I’m always checking mine and the cocci count seems to depend on how long after you feed them you test them. I’ve also found it doesn’t matter what treatment you use getting the cocci count to zero is impossible.

I'm convinced that Cocci isn't a total killer in relation to a pigeons ability to win. But if you can keep the count in good order then it has to be beneficial. Looking back at my diary from 2024 YB season I see this for Gary & Niall Gordon

Week 3 - 2,3,4 against 1,832 Birds - Birds not right suspect Cocci. Test

Week 4 - Results come back on the day of the race. Medium levels of Cocci found. Result 1,8,9,10,25,29,31,39 Open 18,479 Birds
Treat on return.

Week 5 - Having treated for Cocci 1,2,3,4,5,6,12,13,15,16,17,18,19,21,22,23,24,25,27,34,37,38,39,40,54 Open (523 members sent 15,785 birds)

Hello Mike that's an interesting set of results, so would they of been advised to use a certain product or would they change meds on a monthly cycle to keep on top of this, & would they build up a resistance to the meds given.

My opinion cocci is a Skelton key ,it unlocks the door for everything else to get in .

Broadly speaking I'd agree I'd rather keep Cocci under control

Herbots advised baycox then 8 days later baycox again and said they don't seem to get cocci again during season after them 2 bk to bk treatments.
