Why don't they roam or range, the last 3/4 year's they always seem to be flying around the estate. Very seldom have they ranged off in a batch & gone clearing off, they only circle the house when coming into land on the house roof then drop onto the landing board.
I don't think that respo has been a problem, it's just got me thinking that they aren't building up a map of the landscape of how to get from a to b with visual guidance in there heads, any thoughts please. Training they go short distance to start with to build up confidence, I'm just not happy that they don't range on there own or in a batch.

Yes Neil, to be honest I can't remember them ranging well for a long time.
Just got in an annual pattern with the ybs every year, I can't see how they'd ever build up there internal compass if they don't get a build up/map of my area without roaming. If they don't gain this knowledge how are they ever going to get to grips with training.
I've always started at a mile & don't move on until I'm happy with them, I just think for I'll say the last 5 year's they just stay on the estate & never ventured away.

I don't recall a year mine never went ranging. They'd disappear for well over a couple of hours everyday. Only ever fed mine once a day. I'd have a fixed feeding time which never changed and I slowly build them up from 20 mins to the 2 hours by letting them out earlier each time. They'd soon get to the point I'd know when they would arrive back, always with 10 min of their feeding time.

My baby's that were born in December didn't range until they started being trained ,,once I started training them they would return circle loft and go off running this lasted a week the last time they come from training circle loft and returned 3 hours later and 1 never ever returned, after that they was fine ,my may bred baby's weaned in June run before they really batched in the 90 degree heat they would be gone 2 , 3 hours returned absolutely exhausted wings hanging a little appetite but this batch was best out of the training and 2 transporter tosses I only dropped 1 baby ,,
I find natural baby's in spring are unbelievable but bred before spring they don't run.

But about 40-45 trainers unfortunately once I go past bassignbourne barracks we get hit so only went to Caxton about 4 times
I would have like to had more 30/35 miles and less 20 due to lack of racing but they were doing it 21 22 min so I thought why risk all the hassle for 10 miles more
Time will tell if I played to safe

Yes and the Yorkshire fed let go at huntingdon right when Yorkshire middle route would of been coming over huntingdon but I had great toss that day but my Friend in Yorkshire middle route had awful race and I said it was brilliant liberation they just zig zagged and were gone in seconds heading to right of Bassingbourn barracks.NeilA wrote: Wed Oct 15, 2025 6:41 pm Funny you say that we went to Peterborough that day went up 30 min before them
as they told Ray Luffman there now waiting to 12 think they went about 1130
Took mine 1hr 40 got 4 then singles pretty much over the next two three hours later I got like groups of 3/4
We were all the same so I think they turned with them we let about 130 go

Hi Neil, a high carb mix for the main feed at night, plus diat morning feed?. If you tried this in 2026 & still the same not ranging as much what would your approach be then.NeilA wrote: Wed Oct 15, 2025 5:01 pm I know others seem to have this trouble and like you not ideal
I normally give mine main feed at night
There out first thing next morning an in to a light feed and will be gone for ages once going
This year flying hens I changed things as I new the hens would do dead hour so ideal for before work
But my ybs going out in the evening didn’t range even half as good
I wanted to swop back but by then we were early June and I had the hens racing lovely so I left it
Next year I will be back to ybs out in to a light feed main grub at night with 30/40 per cent barley in it

As I said previously they just don't seem to go off, very strange to me not to.
Will give the feed a try & see if I can get a change from them, thank for for your comments.

Mike, I feed diat or depurative just a handful if they've gone out in the morning, I normally take them training in the afternoon if the weather is good . The evening feed is high carb feed with barley, I started to weigh the feed this year so 28 gms per pigeon probably not right but that's what I've been doing, at the moment they are on 50/50 barley & moulting. As I said at the start of my post they just don't seem to want to range which makes me think if I go 5/10 mls & they get split up how are they ever going to find home.
