Another bad one for me!

Thought I'd try something a bit different today with the young bird.

I had an idea to try encouraging them to break from a flock.

I drove to another local fancier a few miles away, and while his birds were flying out, I threw up one of mine every 5 minutes or so!

After a few birds I realised some of them were carrying a bit more food on board than I would have liked!

I held the more experienced birds back to be the last couple thrown up.

I'm now sitting in the sun, thinking I may have missed judged this idea completely as I have only had 3 home out of 8, two of them being experienced race birds that went up last!

5 mile,, they had been out to 10 previously, in another direction.

Obviously the racers have been much further!

They should work it out at 5 miles
If not must ask ya self 3 things
Are they healthy I mean have them tested ok good droppings looking ok don't mean nothing if you have underlying issues because there masked ,
2nd thing are they any good they may be dummys
3rd thing are you making mistakes
And in this order I would check things ok ,,my baby's there first 6 to 10 tosses are single ups but I have fetched birds in that can't handle a 5 mile single toss honestly pedigree to die for but just dummys

Don't test regularly but if I get a instinct I don't fully trust I test for everything it's expensive but puts my mind to peace I don't use pigeon testing centers I use a laboratory that looks after poultry industry it takes a long time because its culture tested but the results are in black and white the exact count of everything.

I understand your thinking. If the cultures take a while, and I know they do as we did occasionally do them with the cows, especially if we had a mastitis case that wasn’t responding to treatment. Do then you find that the birds have recovered, or died, before results come back?

Never had anything where birds die ,but if there's a problem I take there vets advice n follow it to the letter ,birds looking fine don't mean the birds are right there can be carrier pigeons in your flock that live a good life but shed parathyroid any one struggling go on utube and watch the south African vet dr van d zly you will understand so much more where 1 bad bird in flock can be ruining everything ya doing .

I'm hoping for the best obviously, a neighbour said they saw a batch of about 50-60 birds go over around the same time as they was in the air, possibly from the MCC(?).

So I think it's possible they may have gone chasing the big batch!

The three I've had back were also the last three birds to be let up funnily enough!

Ant, I love the fact that the first 6 - 10 chucks you give your babies are single-ups.... can I ask how far you go with these.?

So this being the case that one bad bird could ruin a flock but look fine you would need to test every individual bird in the loft to find the culprit. I presume that the said bird carrying the problem wouldn’t actually win anything. So by selection any bird not performing would be removed anyway. I know you are aiming this at the fancier or new starter that are having a problem with their birds Ant so mean not disrespect to you. It’s good advice and a starting point.

1 quick way to find a carrier pigeon put whole flock on willow bark tea 5 days after 2,3 days watch flock u will see certain pigeons carrying one wing little bit lower than other ,,just cull them pigeons I bought pigeons put them on willow bark tea n killed the lot I bought every one was infected ,another way is treat pigeons with parathyroid treatment miss 1 day and vaccine them with a parathyroid live vaccine all carrier pigeons will look like there going to die even after 24 hours kill these pigeons,,my vet told me this is 2008 each season until 2017 I done this n flew unbelievable since then iv had good n bad seasons but not done to the letter that he taught me all them years ago about removing carrier pigeons.

From 1 mile to 6 miles dave the most awkward toss is all ways 6 miles u ask fellow flyers ya worse toss is 6 miles that's why eijerkamp single tosses at 6 miles as well.
