Yes Dave birds in top form will have small round droppings and down feathers on them. Although they can be also in form without dropping down ...

Yea just get yourself some tablets salt put it in a pot without a lid, and have a look at it 48 hours later, that will tell you all. If it doesn't come out of the pot like it did, there would be a humidity issue in your loft.

I couldn't answer about sand as I've never used it.

I will be splitting my birds in 3 or 4 weeks time and am a bit worried because I havr a couple of dominant older cocks that I know won't let the younger ones settle into a box of their own. Im sure Im not the only one and wondered how do you guys deal with this problem......
