As i am not racing yet I have been feeding a budget feed £8.50 a bag from cooks farm but the birds seem to be very picky about what they eat and don't eat, they seem to leave what i think is barley. Now it could be i am feeding them too much hence they are so picky or there is too much barley in the mix?

this is what they leave

Agree with Potter.
For what you’re doing that mix looks fine. You could change to a breeding mix if you are looking to breed a few youngsters.
Yes they are leaving the barley because you are giving them too much, again not a problem with what you’re doing, but you will have better control of them if kept tighter and you don’t want to leave food in the loft encouraging rodents.

yes i think i do feed too much, 1/2 an ounce per bird i have read, having only got two birds at the minute measuring one ounce is going to take some doing.

Ounce and a quarter a day Paul. Half an ounce is not enough. Per bird that is.

Can't add much more Paul, as others have said you really answered your own question. A lot of fanciers use barley in their mix just for that very reason, an indication that the birds have had enough. Barley is also a very good depurative used to clean out the digestive system after times of stress.
It's not a bad looking mix really especially for the price, you just need to cut it back a little mate. I feed mine between 1.25 Ounces and 1.5 Ounces per day, if they have any feed left from the previous feeding I just give them less for the next one.
Keep up the good work mate 👍🤠

If they leave a little barley, that means they are getting enough.

The others have given good advice.
