Here she is.

Not a good picture at all, she wouldn't stand properly when I pointed the camera at her!

Not scared though, she is very quiet and happy in the loft.

This is what a 600 mile young bird looks like. :D :D

You wouldn't think that pigeon had flown 500 miles and had a night out.

It's in beautiful order and hasn't a feather out of place.

I reckon there are two reasons for it.

First, it is bred from generations of pigeons which can fly the long distance races. They need to be able to do it at a young age to keep a perch.

Second, they are trained and raced to achieve it. They don't get 20 mile training flights and 100 mile races. They fly the program from 100 miles to as far as it goes, and if they can stand it, they have a perch for the winter.

This hen did that for two years, and came within an ace of doing it three years.

It is foreign to me. I am a softy. I don't race them too early, too far, or in poor weather. I think I feel a change of attitude coming on.

She does look in great condition Murray. The basket is still the best pedigree you can have. Pigeons need to come from generations of performances birds and not miss generations with untested birds.

The hen was up on the edge of the patio earlier with the sun on her. Looking beautiful. I thought 'Excellent', dived in and grabbed to camera. Nope, when I came out she was up with the mob doing cart wheels in the strong wind!

The thing thinks it's throat is cut. :( Having been trained for 500 - 600 mile races, she will have been living on, who knows, 70 or 80 % maize.

Mine get about 18-20 % maize in the normal mix. Which is 18-20% more than they get at a lot of places!

I was out there earlier hand feeding it single grains of maize!

Have to think of a name for it.

Many of mine have names. Most of them have nothing to do with anything, it's just what comes into my head when they need a name.

This one needs a good name. Any ideas?
