That came as a bit of a surprise......

..... well a shock really.

As some of you are aware with one thing and another, particularly family health issues the pigeons have had to take a very back seat in the greater scheme of things.
It has been one step forward and two back since last November but things were settling down a bit over the last couple of weeks and I began working a small team of young birds in preparation for our Open from Talbenny, a race from which I clocked very well last season. As my luck would have it my wife was re-admitted to hospital on basketing night so that was that. Thankfully she was only in overnight and is as right as rain again.
There were four birds coming very well from training so I began to look at them as possible candidates for the I N F C race from Penzance which was held last Monday. Basketing was on the Friday and through no ones fault my lift to the marking station was cancelled too late for me to make other arrangements.
We had a club race on the Saturday from Fermoy, a distance of 117 miles to me so I entered the team in that. I had an ETA pencilled in at 2 hours and 30 minutes and had positioned myself out in the garden well in advance of that, and waited and waited and waited. After an hour and 30 minutes I threw my hands up in despair and started to make my way in turning as I reached the back door just in time to see my first arrival land on the trap quickly followed by the second four minutes later (after watching an empty sky for 90 minutes + 4 minutes is a blink of an eye :D ) and the third a further four minutes behind him. The fourth bird, which would have been my Nomer in the National was a full 15 minutes behind my first pigeon so nothing new there.
I was so convinced that my times were late I only went down to the club to get my clock cleared as I use it for training so you can imagine my surprise when the result was read out and I finished First, Second, Fourth and Sixth.
Only 3 members raced sending upwards of 40 pigeons but I was thankful for the win as it was a high in an otherwise very dismal year.
You can never lose a homing pigeon - if it doesn't come back, all you have lost is a pigeon.
