A quite week this week. Had the youngsters in the baskets again today. They are coming on well. They are flying well. Being let out for an hour in the morning before being called in, then let out again mid afternoon for a few hours. Although they are keen to come out in the morning they don’t fly for long. They do seem to fly better in the afternoon when left out for a while, regardless of the weather. When fed in the evening they aren’t allowed back out, which is working better.
It has been a lousy week with a lot of rain. They have had a bath every day out in the rain. When we get a spell of good weather I will look to start training them. No hurry as their first race won’t be until 17th August.
I haven’t raced the old birds for the last couple of weeks and won’t be the next 2. My next intended race is Fougeres with the BICC on the 29th July. I should then be racing for 5 consecutive weeks. I’ve had a re-think and decided, as we are in the very early stages of this venture, and I don’t have many to play with, I’m not going to send the yearlings to Bergerac or Bordeaux. I only have 4 yearlings, main 2 being Magic’s Red cock and Pete’s Blue Chequer cock. So I am going to try to give these 2 both of the Le Mans races at 240 miles. That will mean that they would both of had 3 channel races each this year, which I feel is enough. They can be pushed on next year. I would have liked to have given them Poitiers, but of course were unable to. If in future I have more yearlings to play with and know more of their capabilities I may push some of them a bit further. This years yearlings will hopefully go to Tarbes 553 miles next year.
I have got 6 two year olds that will probably be split with 3 going to Bergerac and 3 to Bordeaux. I also have 3 latebreds that will be trained with the youngsters and go to the young bird national any age races.
That’s about it for this week, hopefully the weather will improve soon.
Just some photos inside the loft this evening
