History day

Got to give our little town it’s due it does put on a few things through the year to get people out. Last Saturday they had history day. Not sure what it was all about but there were a lot of people walking around dressed from the period of the war. Along with this they had a precession of wartime vehicles and a lot of old cars. There were a lot of people out and about. It didn’t actually do our trade any good but still nice to see.

There is a lot of history in our town with a lot of old buildings with a bit of history behind them. Our shop has been a pet shop for the past 50+ years but before that it had been a photographic studio, dance school and a part of a shoe factory. It was used by the Americans as a medical office. Of course before the A303 bypassed the town the high street would have been the main road. The Dolphin is among 3 old coaching inns which is why there is the large arch way to allow coaches and horses to enter. The now restaurant area out the back would have been the old stable block where the horses would have rested overnight.

Very interesting Andy, I do like to keep the hold history alive, sadly these days the people in charge try to change names etc to stamp their own names in history losing the real history.

The dolphin is mentioned in the 1500s. At that time there were 3 coaching inns in the town with a total of 54 rooms and stabling for 250 horses. Wincanton is about half way between London and the West Country so an important halfway point back in the day. I discovered a lot of fascinating facts about the town but won’t bore you all with it. lol.

The first horse race was recorded on the site of Wincanton race course back in the 1700s. Wincanton is owned by the same people who own Cheltenham.
