Most pairs have youngsters under them now. The oldest pair are 6 days old today. Just 6 more eggs due to hatch over the next 3 days. So far only one egg has failed to hatch, so very pleased. Should give me 21 youngsters 9 days between oldest and youngest.

i think may have solved the problem with the nest boxes have added a shelf on the outside rather than them going straight in and birds are landing on it first

They do prefer to be higher up if they can. You say that you put in new nest boxes George. Were the cocks allowed to select their boxes before being paired up? When you paired them up were the pairs shut in the boxes? You say that they are new pairings! 10 out of my 11 pairings in the widowhood section are new pairings.
Because of me changing my lofts inside this year the cocks were in that section for 2 months before being paired. There were/are no other perches in that section so the cocks had to perch in the nest boxes. This meant that all the cocks had taken a box before the hens were introduced. I had more of a problem the previous year when I had box perches in that section as some of the birds would prefer to perch in them especially rather than the lower row of nest boxes.
