Obviously that is is his call to make, and no doubt he has good reasons, but it is a shame. When I was faced with the same decision lately I found I was not ready to get rid of the birds just yet.
I hope you will enjoy your pigeons for a while yet, Steve.
Not a decision taken lightly Murray but the way things are at present with health and other issues think the time has come to make that hard decision believe me it is not what I wanted but had to have some blood tests last week and other things have shown up that are not very good for me

I found it so hard because it was happening over a few weeks, birds getting picked up on different days. Then the last day when the final birds got picked up, i was left with 2 empty lofts. They went the following week, and i was then walking into an empty back garden. I still miss them today and always will do.
I'm missing them already and mine still here, it will be hard very hard indeed, I have thought about if I can get them right down in numbers that may help and still keep one loft and 20 or less birds in it

Yes I had this on the Isle of Wight when I packed up, I managed to re home most of the younger birds but had to dispose of the older ones. I also had chickens at the time, I found homes for the hens but had half a dozen cockerels that had to go.
It was horrible and I wouldn't want to do it again.
Shame that Trev

The issue I have is none of mine are broken except few oldies that I used to race, and folks just don't want them what I may have to do is just go down one day and open the doors if they go they go and if they stay they stay, as much as I don't want to go down this route I may have no choice as I will not cull any

There is a hold up with us taking possession of the house at St Arnaud. The elderly owners are going into a new unit, but not until end of January or early Feb. Then we want to do some renovations before we move in. So it could easily be 6 or 8 weeks, maybe a little longer. That's okay,
Not to long then, good luck with it all, I hope you and Catherine settle in well and enjoy a very long and happy retirement

Murray wrote: Sun Jan 07, 2024 8:43 pm Yes, we were in Bendigo for about 17 years, about 15 years at that house. But the plan was to sell up and by something smaller in the country and have some money left over. It appears to have worked.
We came to Australia 18 years ago, both of us from previous marriages, and without 2 shillings. Now we can retire and have no worries.
I have moved a few times but we have now been in our home with the shop for 20 years this year. I brought it initially with my ex-wife but have been with Roxanna for 19 years this year. We will now be here until we retire but will then sell up and hopefully like you will be able to buy a house outright and have enough to buy a large mobile/camper van if our health is good enough.
Hope your dreams turn to reality mate
