Deep litter lofts

Was always a big fan of the old beat of British video tape featuring my old friend Frank tasker and Geoff Kirkland.
In Geoff's loft, he had straw down on the floor. I've seen this at Freddy Vandenheede's too, as well as many many successful yb specialist fanciers.
How and what's the best way to maintain and go about this way of deep litter? The birds always look so much more at home and loving.
Reason why I ask, on moving from London to Glossop, I've taken the stock pigeons up and had a new loft built. This new loft has weird flooring with like a honey comb patter and is black. Even on scraping there's parts that lay in the indents and it really annoys me so was looking at a deep litter alternative.
I've used cocci granules in the past which I'm a massive fan off, which I would go back to if needed.
