When it comes to making different choices about your birds, if you have a clear understanding, of how your birds are flying. Only you can work with these birds, for them to show their true ability. You are the keeper doing the work needed to manage the birds.

But for a novice just starting off surely we would have to pick the brains of people out there who have had birds like yourself for many years, I would understand people in your own club not wanting to tell you to much in case your birds start winning in the club.
But surly there are people out there that would give great advice to new starters to get them up and running.

Yes you’re right Tony. You need to listen to others and even try things out that others may suggest. But at the end of the day it’s about finding both pigeons and a system that suit you and your birds. Not many would do things the way I do, but it works for me. So all I can do is say what I do and how mine do doing it my way and others can use my information in what ever way they wish. My system certainly wouldn’t suit all. That’s part of what makes this sport so great. There is no right or wrong way. Even after more than 50 years in the sport we are still trying different things out to get that little bit more from our birds.

You have so much information on the internet if you want use that information. You also get told different things, you should be doing. myself i would try to work on a system that suits you and the birds.
Dont forget the racing season comes and goes very fast, so you have to be ready so its all about routine, preparation and observation. Are your birds healthy? if so you can start the work needed for them
to be ready for racing. Now this is only my thoughts, when i have brought in the birds. That i feel i can form a future foundation out, but like i say that is me.

people say don't bring birds in from here, there and everywhere.
But it's hard to find One or Two pigeon people who have the time or room to breed Y/B or Late bred birds for new starters.
If you was starting over again and you know what you know now, what would be your starting point.
How many birds would you bring in.
From how many different people.
Y/Bs or Late bred birds to get set up for breeding and racing next year.

Myself Tony i would be looking for a good top flyer, Local or out of your area. I would then build up a budget to buy 12 youngsters in total. If you could find 2 good flyers you can then buy a kit of 6, from each top flyer.
Now i feel it all depends on your budget, size of your racing loft. This would the help you in finding what you want for starting up, Dont forget loft equipment need for the racing loft, Drinkers, feeders, Traps, perch boxs. also a basket. That is before you buy any food. I hope this helps others.

Thanks Devo, Would you say 2 kits of 6 would be enough to start off with.
If I was lucky to get the birds around end of August as late bred birds could I use these birds to breed off and if so when would be the best time to pair them up
If I couldn't breed from these birds due to their age, should I look for some stock birds to breed from.

Tony myself i would be looking at proven stock birds, if you are looking to start up this year. Now i always paired up on boxing day, using felt inners for the bowl and plenty of clean straw. Under the bowl i would have a bar mats soaked in creasolt. But if you were just going to race young birds next year, I would go for the first plan of 2 kits of 6 youngsters from 2 top lofts, It all depends on your budget. Just my thoughts, others may differ.
