I know tends to be more of a thing outside of the UK scene.

But I thought I'd ask, has anyone one here done much colour breeding?

Deliberately trying to up to performance of coloured racers?

A couple of years back I did have a couple of yellow mealys that were true racing birds!

Never tried it

I have a black grizzle hen at stock and she throws all sorts of colours that are proving to be quality birds.
The first year I had her she bred a white grizzle that I also put to stock and between them they are breeding white grizzle, black grizzle, tiger grizzle, brown grizzle as well as normal blues, pied and blacks.
A black n white gay pied was 3rd section from Bicc Pau last year (600+), he will hopefully go to barca this year and I have a white grizzle, and a black from her going to Pau next week.
The colours come thro various pairings but nothing that I have consciously bred for colour.
Ppl say that the pretty whites and coloureds are the first to get hit by percy and I have had several take a hit and survive ok but I have also got 3 and 4 y.olds that are predominately white that keep coming well and I have probably had as many chequers blues and reds been hit the same.

Breeding a bird of any colour is easy if you know anything about genetics. But breeding a performance bird of any colour is considerably harder

I would imagine the hardest part is to still be as ruthless, even if the colours are right!

If they were standard colour, and not good enough, the colours should expect the same result!

I know ppl who won't even have a red in the loft saying (and believing) that it is a weakness.

An old club mate of mine wouldn't have a red either in the loft. I give him a Mealy once to try and change his mind, even after it won for him he still didn't like the bird.

Silly isn’t it? We should all know that a good pigeon can be any colour
