I saw 3 lots at a farm last year a seed barley they were keeping a brewery grade both you could eat or was clean
Then one going to animal feed due to quality not being the same level he said now that look grubby so I thought over cleaned this shit grade to start with

Not sure Neil iv used best quality maris otter brewing malt barley n clean farm barley iv seen no difference in birds what so ever pal,,
When my birds get 80 percent barley 20 percent hemp they fly high like dots for a hour never looking to he in loft after 45 ta 50 mins they just fly sky out on it ,,remember 5 yrs ago was short on barley before Xmas the barley I got looked rubbish n was dusty but birds droppings was unbelievable n they flew like red arrows ,

Put them in a glass of water 24 hours then on a paper plate in damp kitchen roll
The farm barley had tails inch to 2 inches long by the time the vl n beyers had just sprouted.

What do you think about them tails or ears like a spikes on it would that s watch there throat or cause canker or fungus issues ?
I got a lovely bag of seed barley but it’s got them on it

Don't worry about long tails on it the pigeons wouldn't eat it if it hurt them ,think it's a old wives tail about cutting throat n that rubbish,

Ant got it spot on, it's probably barley that's been sent for malting and has been rejected due to high level of screenings ( barley less then 2.2 mm) and other small admixture like seed, dust and other debris?
The farmer has 2 options, sell it cheaper or take it back and clean it up, alot of small corns can also increase the nitrogen level, that's why Maltsters and Distillers like the plump grains .

Plump and uniform grain ensure even water uptake and don't always indicate high nitrogen level. ALL barley can be malted. To meet malting grade ANY barley must have lower protein levels (around 9.5% to 12.5%) this range produces high starch content and good malt extract. (this can change depending on what is being made)
nitrogen content, typically below 1.65%
98% germinative capacity
moisture content should be below 13.5%
The main reason for rejection is inconsistent batches from the same source.

That said Neil re-cleaning it doesn't change the grains quality. I very much doubt all re-cleaned barley sold is rejected from the brewing industry? If any is, it's probably been rejected because it didn't meet the standard after it was re-cleaned, and not because it was re-cleaned. And fanciers shouldn't think only brewing quality is good for pigeon feed? I very much doubt ANY brewing quality barley is used in pigeon feeds. A farmer would get more selling it to brewers than feed companies.

Another thing that we all have seen is yb Goe missing they return 3 weeks later they have been in fields eating wheat n barley from the dirt drinking from rivers or puddles or gutters and they return in show condition.

Yes Anthony brewing grade is the best it germinates the best so a healthy grain
They fatten animals on barley due to unused carbs it doesn’t have to be decent
To be honest I can’t say mine return on show condition mate they feel dry to the touch but I know people say they do just not mine I think

Iv also had them return rough but iv had baby's return
with beautiful skin liked they been hand bathed gleaming like when yiu see a wood pigeon in perfect health n condition just unbelievable.
