Is respiratory contagious?

Are any of the respiratory illness's contagious.
I have a yb went missing for 5 days. Has been back a week and Ive got the yellow stains on the walls around his perch.
Starting to see it around a few other perches now too.
I thought that with a dowelled front to my loft I wouldnt suffer any respiratory illness as it is constantly open.
So not sure if its the loft or this bird has brought it back.
