I've been reading some old pigeon magazines, Australian pigeon Journal and the Pigeon Racing Pictorial.
Some are from the 1970's, and it is interesting and sometimes amusing to think how much some things have changed. Some of the lofts are obviously from the 40's and 50's.
A lot of the fanciers featured don't just feed beans, they feed peas and wheat too!
One thing I noticed is many flyers interviewed use what you would call a trapping mix. A small seed mix. I don't use small seeds as a treat, mine are too tame anyway, and I don't want them thinking I'm just a sweet dispensing machine
I think canary seed and rape and millet and things in a grain mix are fine, but mine only get a small amount when racing. At present they don't need hotting up any more.
Do other members use small seeds as a treat, or to get them trapping?

No, only ever use my normal mix

The only thing I’ve used from time to time is a conditioner which when I’ve used it I just mix some in with their normal mix. Never used a trapping mix.

Never used seed for trapping I have used my own made up fatty mix mainly for the cocks Thursday night and Fridays
I do think a seed / conditioning mix is handy for the ybs also on Fridays although I tend to use a energy/ diet mix as that’s all small as that goes through them just as quickly it seems

I used red band many years ago, the birds went crazy for it.

If you come across any Australian Pigeon Journals from the 1990's - early 2000's Murray don't be shocked if you see some of my old articles in there.

Those were the days when me and my Canadian vet friend Gordon Chalmers used to write in there

(I used depurative as a tit bit for the YB's on return of training)

I haven't read many of the Aussie magazines, and I have maybe 200 of them, but I remember reading your articles years ago. I look forward to re discovering them
