I've never used it but have seen it used. This like you say was some 30 years ago. The stuff nearly blew the birds brains out. Not sure if the stuff that came out was naturally supposed to be there or not. In later years often saw a fancier bringing his birds to the club with their heads covered with what looked liked dye.
Not sure the stuff sold today is the same product. Maybe somebody who uses it will reply?

like putting vicks liquid up your nose it would do same to you makes snot liquid and they deff get it out lol heads up in the air and lots of sneezing
