It was the first 600 mile bird, one flying further now. Some big teams away having poor returns.

That's the name of the game. You can't wait for ever for a perfect day. The Barcelona race faced the same conditions but masks the missing birds by closing the race when 25% are home. Tarbes has been a very hard race this year but many of these birds will still return. There will be YB races flown this year where fanciers will have have losses worse than this.
A look at how many fanciers send tells a story. 5 fanciers sent just ONE bird and have clocked it, one flying 740 miles. Have the big team men who have sent 30 to 70 birds really got that many birds capable of competing?
And it should also be pointed out that there could be more birds home than showing, as you don't have to verify all your returns.

Did you have much luck from I guess it would be pau national or was getting to marking stations awkward being Reading , I think it was Reading then ?

I know you have Marleys birds I was lucky enough to visit him in my teens a lovely man was you racing Marleys birds before you packed in

Marking then was at Crewe. Fanciers around me joined the NE700 Mile Club(formed in 1974). The club ran a pick up service the night before (adding a day in he basket) which the majority of fanciers used and were marked ALL by Rose (can't think of her surname) I myself have always only had a small team of birds and did send I think 4 times to Pau 734 miles. Always a single entry did get them home (twice in race time) but not as fast to make the section result. Recall one year sending a Red cock to Nantes 464 miles that I was going to send to Pau he arrived 2nd day having been in the wires. He recovered enough to go to Pau, I sent him to an open race from Retford where I was flying just 45 miles just to test his fitness. He won the race. But when sent to Pau I never saw him again. I beat a few of the local big names a few times, including Brian Denney, but never at Pau, once beat him by 4 hours at Nantes. My main success came at flying YBs over 300/368 miles in the NFC having birds in the first 3 in clock station several times, the best being 1st & 2nd Guernsey only 2 in race time, when I only sent 3 birds which was my normal entry.
Marking for the MNFC was even worse I was once the longest flying flyer in the North East. I had to drive miles to mark then, once doing a 200 mile round trip to LPW when Mikes mam was sec. That year it was Nantes 464 miles it was a very hard race, I clocked early 2nd day but didn't take the clock in as the clock station was at Gainsborough some 45 miles away.
I got the Marley's just a couple of years before I stopped racing so never really tested them myself but did Win one of my last races with one. The birds I had before were mainly Scottish distance birds and Brian Denney's. All the birds except about 3 are now Marley's. Now due to COPD I just breed YBs for others to race.
