I let the late late babies out for an explore while I cleaned the box. Their little mother has just laid again.
When cock and the hen put themselves away I turned around and couldn't find the babies. The little ratbags had put themselves in through the sputnik and were in the loft! I left them there for a while, the others didn't seem too worried but I put them back in the box in case a cock has a go at them.
I'll let them stay in there tomorrow and see how they go.
This is quite extraordinary.
The Pitbull cock, Babydot, was born on May 15th last year. He's a late bred.
His son Frightening was born on the 1st of March this year. He's a late bred.
This pair were born in July so they are very very late bred.
The Babydot is 15 months old and is a grandfather already. He looks like an old bird, he's just massive. Not big, just a ball of muscle. There seems to be a genetic thing there. They are very very early maturing. He's paired up to a daughter of the Billiondollarbaby and the grizzle Thone' cock. Reggie the grizzle had one race last year and was on the board with the winner so she went well.
I'm quite excited about it.

I think that for winter youngsters they are very good, especially since we have had a terribly wet winter, some months up to 2 to 3 times the average rainfall.
The loft is very good but you can't stop the humidity. So I've been using lots of pine chip bedding around the walls, especially under the perches. At Au$14.00, about 7 quid, for a pack it's cheap and it's amazing how dry it keeps the shed.
I reckon if you have a dry shed it is half the battle.

What pleases me about those babies is they are so well and vital, so bright in the eye and healthy, and none of their parents or grand parents have ever seen as much as an asprin.
Their grandfather the Babydot the Pitbull was born here from an egg, but otherwise they are bred from 3 or 4 or 5 generations that have never had any medication.
Some may disagree, but I say, just look at their eyes. Do they look like they need "treating"?
