I thought it was just me who suffered having to make those sort of decisions so I guess we are all in the same boat.
What would you put those losses down to Trev, bad luck, errors of judgement, conditions or birds may not have been good enough?
I'd love to know what nest position those 2 hens are in
so when I read your "Littlehampton " report I will get why you are putting that much faith in them.
No mate, we all have difficult choices to make.
Although there does seen to have been some difficult racing again this year, with some fanciers experiencing heavy losses. Unfortunately I have to take the blame for many of mine, I don't think the birds were prepared properly, I had too many birds and didn't put in enough effort. Then when it comes to racing you miss the little tell tale signs that tell you a bird isn't quite right, then unfortunately because a bird has done it all before, and has won before, you just turn a blind eye and assume the bird will manage it anyway. After 40+ years in the game I still make rookie errors, this year its cost me dearly.
The two hens I've been looking at may not go this week now, the yearling has unfortunately left her eggs, I was hoping she would hang on for another day or two.
The other hen is sitting about 14 days, which is just about perfect, however she hasn't had that spark about her so I may hang on to her for next year.
I do have a few other options, including a 2 year old hen who was my 2nd bird from Hexham and was 5th club from the same race last year, she is also sitting 14days.
I'll make my decisions tomorrow on basketing day.
Good luck with yours mate.
