Fantastic pigeon Mike - I guess birds like that are what we all dream of, certainly me anyway.
I've spent too many hours in the garden just wondering whether or not they will come, let alone wondering if I will miss them going in.
To have that sort of consistency and reliability must give you a huge amount of satisfaction taking your birds to the club on a Friday night and even more taking your clock on a Saturday.

I know it sounds odd, but Saturday was the easy day.

The work was done, all you had to do was ensure you never got caught out

Bad traps were never an issue - my cocks rarely missed despite having a 40 feet tall set of trees stood 18 feet in front of the lofts.

When I lost "Houdini" in June 2006 it obviously hurt because he was my "go to" pigeon.

I needed some others to fill that void

Fortunately "Merlin" and "Jack Flash" stepped in

Here's one report from 2nd June 2007 featuring those 2 cocks

I only sent 3 to this race, and one of them was a cock returning to the basket after injury

What an amazing team of pigeons Mike, one to be very proud of not just a won hit wonder, a credit to your skill & mindset in getting performances like that.

Totally agree
it must have been a pleasure just to see a team like that every morning when you open the shed ,knowing each week your going to win or go super close come Saturday

And to be honest, if you're racing in strong competition you can never really expect to win every week

All that drove me was to get the very best out of what I had in front of me

If my very best birds gave me their very best I knew someone else would have to come to the party with at least that to beat me

You've actually hit the nail on the head here

The most single important aspect of any pigeon fancier - the "mindset"

That's all that drives / inspires those who are successful from the also-rans

The absolute desire to be the BEST they can be - never accept 2nd best in any way shape or form

If he was 5 yards behind with 50 yards to go, no question he'd win
As others put the brakes on to navigate to their box he never did that
He'd still be rolled into a little ball going through the doors and he used to bounce off the back of his box
