I would go for late breds from their race team rather than their stock birds. Their race birds would have come through this years racing so will have something good about them. Just make sure their from birds that have been racing at the distance you are looking at. Stock birds are all well and good but they will have to be kept in and they would probably be older birds that others want to move on. I also wouldn’t be swayed by big pedigrees or names. These mean little about what the birds will do. As I said get birds from ones that have already been tested. They won’t all be any good and realistically if you get 4 reasonable birds from the 12 you’ll be doing quite well. The odds would be no better if paying a fortune for them. The late breds should be able to be bred from early next year and you should be able to get 2 rounds, 4 youngsters from each pairing.
Just my thoughts. Others may not agree.
Thanks for the feedback Andy on the birds and what to get to start me off.
I have been offered some birds from a couple of people I follow on YouTube on Live stream so you can see the birds trapping home from the races, One fella as offered me them for free another a few £ which won't kill me so I don't mind and I'm in touch with another who will let me know the price on a kit 6 which I think won't be cheap but they will be from good stock so it could be I end up with 20 to start off with but I will let you know on this over the next few months,
Tony that will be a good start for you

I hope so, I just wasn't sure how many birds to get in, or where to get them from but feedback on here has been get them from 2 or 3 people that are doing well in races and the birds are racing what I want to race.
These people who have offered me birds as I say I have followed on YouTube for the past 2 seasons and they always seem to do well with their birds and races so with a bit of luck I might start off with a good team.
I was thinking of putting my own plastic (Phone Number) Rings on the birds but different colour for the person I got them from, just to give me the heads up on which birds do well for me what's your thoughts or do you have another way of keeping a track on the birds you bring in.

Tony your loft diary, making daily comments on your birds. All ring number of Cocks and hens. and all details you need for the future. How your feeding, changes to your system, these are all daily records of your loft. And always include medication, and jabs to the birds on what date. When it comes to breeding a list of pairs, when eggs layed, hatched and ring number on the youngsters. Then you know what was their parents, this will help in the future.

The likes of the jabs, I would think from the people I get the birds off this would already be done, (Like buying a dog) but for anything I breed who will do the jabs, is that down to me or the Sec of the club ?
Medication, well that's why I'm on here to pick everyone's brains when it come to things like this I will defo be needing support.
Yes I will try my best to keep a diary on the birds I could do with a book inside the loft and then transfer this to the laptop just to be safe.
Feed for the birds again this will be a learning process for me, from what to feed, when to feed it and how much to feed the birds each day.
You'll all be sorry I joined this site with all the questions I have to ask.

I use the coloured clip rings mate they are a good idea.
Use them like you say for quick identification of where you got the birds but then keep that same colour for all the birds you breed from them.
I keep the same colour from the hen and have done so for many generations.
If say you 6 blues in your team you can instantly recognise what line they are from.

Thanks Dave, yes that what I was looking at, good point you made about continuing the colour ring through out the Y/Bs from them thanks again
