It’s good if you to explain Dave
I just don’t know how the female if there is one gives birth is it eggs or live
Or if indeed it works like that at all
Even in conditions that suit cocci where do the next generation come from
The reproduction system really is where I’m stuck
Or is it not a worm/ parasite type creature that reproduces from itself

Dr Walker the Australian vet say that the Oocysts are passed out & are eggs I didn't know that, these egg's hatch out this is when pigeons pick-up these from the floor in contaminated food or just eating dropping. They can be both male & female & will hatch if the environment is right. This is probably how you get different levels of Coccidiosis throughout the year that affects pigeons.

These can also be sexually & asexually these will attach themselves in various organs of the pigeons but mostly in the lining of the bowel, then the cycle starts over again when it's passed out in the droppings .

That’s the bit Dave
Now with normal worms we treat and treat again 12 days later
But with Cocci we treat once over 1-5 days depending on what you are using
So my understanding is that we do that to worms as products don’t kill the eggs but we kill them when they hatch with the 2nd treatment
But we don’t with cocci so does that mean something like baycox kills there eggs so no need to treat twice
Or are the eggs never in the pigeon although the cocci is are they only passed out

Hello Neil, I would think that it would kill the Oocysts/ egg's in one hit over the period say a weeks course of a Cocci cure, get whatever attached itself to the pigeons organs/bowel away dead.
Well they got to be in the pigeon at various stages I would of thought, if you don't treat then I think this may when racing cause a problem/ of the pace.
Maybe burn the floor, perches, etc if there is anything & try to be clean not letting thing build up to cause a problem in the first place, the problem is when they mix on the transporter so I think you need to be on your game when they return from a racing if possible. Oh & 1 other thing Neil don't burn your loft down m8.
Regards Dave.

I’m just assuming. But it sounds from Dave’s explanation that the eggs don’t stay in the body for very long and are passed out almost as soon as they are “laid”. So any treatment would kill the worms inside the bird. The important thing form what I understand is the cleanliness of the loft after and during treating is the important part so that the worm eggs passed out aren’t re-injested and start the life cycle again. Seems like the main objective of the cocci worm is to infest as many hosts as possible.
Back just enjoying club racing for the time being.

Be interesting to know if the eggs are immediately passed out

Morning Neil, try & get your head around this, a dramatic number of Oocysts are shed in faeces and this can be many million times higher than the number that are ingested. It takes 2-3 weeks from the infection via the mouth to passing Oocysts from the rectum .

Reading that Dave it kind of makes me think that 2 treatments separated by say 10-15 days would be required
It’s all above my mental capacity to be honest
I just thought it strange that worms are 2 treatments cocci just the one
