Knowing when YB's are ready for racing?

It’s our first race this weekend too with the 3 counties. For me being the shortest flier it is only 34 miles. It is a sectional lib though so at least our birds won’t be being dragged down into Devon and Cornwall for the first 2 races. We can send young birds to race and old birds as trainers. I have a dozen late breds from last year that haven’t raced but have been trained with the youngsters that I’ll be sending.

This is good practice ,when late breds from last year. Are allowed to fly in the young birds, good look Andy.

I shouldn't worry too much about them taking 45 minutes the first time at 25 miles, they've maybe had a little tour. Take them back tomorrow and they'll probably be a lot quicker.
I'm fairly keen on training, I think it's hard to overdo training young birds. It's where they learn their skills. Other people are different.
Just my two bobs worth, but to go 80 miles in the first race I used to go 15 miles over and over, 30 miles at least 4 or 5 times, and one or two at 40 miles.
Where I live now the first races are short, so it's just about sending them about 20 miles as many times as possible to get them jumping out and heading away.

You don't want to help your YBs to get home. YBs should never be trained with old birds. If YBs can't think for themselves, they just become followers.

To be honest i disagree with this. atleast for the first 3-5 training tosses i basket a few ob's with them until they get used to the basket and built some confidence. the other 15-20 road trainings i wont basket any ob's with them but for the first tosses i don't see any issue. Maybe if you only do a few road trainings before the races start then sure basketing ob's with them all the time is probaly not beneficial for the yb's but if you do 20-25 tosses like we do the first 5-7 with ob's don't hurt

Leon you should always do what works for you. I never in over 50 years let old birds & young birds go together. Many fanciers insult the intelligence of their birds. They make work for themselves and make things too complicated. I'm still astonished at the disasters fanciers have when training YBs, especially at very short distances of less than 5 miles.
If your YBs are ranging well, 10 miles is not a problem for the first toss.

That i can already agree more with alot of people do not trust their birds inteligence enough. And unfortunatelly not enough people get their birds running properly on the house. When we let our yb's out on the house you wont see them for 45-60 minutes. But same for training tosses alot of people sleep on it and then get mad when they loose their yb's on our first training toss 2025 with the combine over 35% of the yb's got lost some people only had 3 home from 37 basketed. Then they blame the flight controller. These are the same people that trained their yb's 1-2x before with max 2-3 miles.

Personally I wouldn't send them mate give them another week I like mine to of done several 50 mile tosses before race one I want to know they capable and not lose birds, see lots of fanciers first race Saturday and they only at 25/30 miles! and I get that people don't like to push the birds but I get less losses pushing them imo, also get that people don't always have the ability to take them 50 regularly also with work commitments etc.

Yes it must be tough to get the birds to 40 and 50 miles time and time again
