Thats a rather tight schedule. Not impossible but any late returns from that 50 mile toss i wouldnt basket anymore for that race. Our combine has another training toss next tuesday and race on saturday and im already skipping that one because i want the week to prepare them for the race and not have them return on tuesday from 80km and basket on friday again.Tony-P- wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2026 4:12 pm can you not get a training toss in at 5o miles before the birds first race at the weekend Mark,
As Devo said if you can't it might be best to carry on training and race them next weekend
Knowing when YB's are ready for racing?

Hey Mark, I can't really advise you but I can tell you that I would be erring on the side of caution. You don't say how many chucks they have had at 25 miles.
I would want half a dozen before being confident about getting them on race day - I dont consider 1 or 2 to be enough.
Further, are you confident they can drink in the basket and hsve they had a night in the basket - all soooo important to their first exprrience of thr race bssket and elements mine must have before going.
For me as well, mine have to have a single up from thst 25 mile point before going to the first race.
Ours is 80+miles too but I shall miss that because they haven't had that yet.

It’s our first race this weekend too with the 3 counties. For me being the shortest flier it is only 34 miles. It is a sectional lib though so at least our birds won’t be being dragged down into Devon and Cornwall for the first 2 races. We can send young birds to race and old birds as trainers. I have a dozen late breds from last year that haven’t raced but have been trained with the youngsters that I’ll be sending.
