Half a dozen stock birds thought a dawn fly was a good idea, and two of the small ones had their first big fly, I was thinking I'd never get away.
But just for once, at all came together, everything was in surprisingly quickly and away I went.
It's about 70 miles to Bendigo, and I had the radio on LOUD and cruising along. Thinking I wished Devo was here. He likes driving along in the country here, chatting about this and that.
Got to Davey's place, nobody home.
A minute later Stacey arrives, " He's not here, he forgot he's umpiring football".
So I called him. He's on the field, with his phone in his pocket. "Hang on" He says, " someone's going to kick goal".
A few moments later, "Yea I forgot about this".
He told me which pair in which pen to take the eggs from and slip pot eggs under.
"You know where the key is!"

I said to Catherine that I wanted to get the young grizzle cock paired up and just on eggs for the first race.
Et voila, this morning he's in a corner box with the little dark hen. I popped a nest bowl in and hopefully they'll stick. Not always the case with young birds the first time.
I'll try to get her to lay and put dummy eggs under her, then remove them so she's laid again just before the first race.

The young birds were off their heads this morning, so they had a toss this afternoon, a nice little fly into a head wind.
They must have been going pretty much full throttle, because they didn't arrive in a bunch, there were four or five, then 20 seconds later another couple and a few seconds later another couple.....
All were counted, except the little dark hen. I figured she'd be back, she has been several minutes behind a few times. She's tiny and I don't think she's much good. Sure enough a little bit latter she came storming in.
I might pull her out and keep her for a mate for the young grizzle cock. She won't make a racer, she's just a 'come home' pigeon.
