Interesting topic. I think it depends a bit on where you are. Here in Australia the losses are often heavy. Concrete floors on damp days draws moisture, the only loft I was in with a concrete floor, had straw on the floor, and the guy had a great record at 500+ miles.

One of the most under rated grains there is, and the old story that it dries the feather. I have not seen any evidence of that.

R. Carruthers, of Bonnyrigg in Scotland won 1st Open Sartilly, 1989, flying 496 miles, with a 9 year old hen.
