Pigeon has been attacked, need help

hi i need urgent help please

a wild pigeon came into my garden to eat seeds as usual

i noticed when the pigeon arrived it has been attacked

if you look at the photos i have uploaded you can see the feathers on its back has been ripped off

its side also missing some feathers

am not sure what attacked it you think a cat did this?

the pigeon is quite tame it always let me get close to it when feeding

i got it and brought it into my home now is in a cage

what is the next step for me to help this pigeon survive?

am worried it might get an infection and not survive in next 24 hours or so as cats can give disease if it was a cat or whatever else

do i take this pigeon to a vet? but i heard some bad stores how a vet may put a pigeon down?

rspca?

how i stop this pigeon being put down and get the vet to treat it correctly?

or what treatment do i use if i need do this myself?

please help me and tell me what i need to do because i don't want the pigeon to die on me

just to add am in greater manchester north west Oldham area so were do i take piggeon if i need go somewhere? i cant travel far so hope be close

let me know please what i need to do as time is important

It looks like it’s had a lucky escape from a Hawk. The hawk would have had it pinned on the floor and been ripping into the pigeons back. Either something frightened the hawk away or somehow it managed to get away.

Pigeons are very resilient and it’s surprising what they will recover from. I would just clean it up with warm water with a mild disinfect in it. You could get an antiseptic spray (leucillin). You should be able to get that from your local pet shop. You shouldn’t need to do anymore, just keep it fed and watered. It will take sometime before it starts to feather up again but should do eventually.

@andy123

thanks for reply

is the pet shop open or closed i ask because of covid?

also how would i clean this pigeons back?

just use the spray and that it?

should i clean rub its back with any soft cloth to remove blood etc?

i imagine its back would be very sensitive sore so not sure touching its back with a cloth be good

let me know please

@optimusprime yes I own a pet shop in Somerset and we are classed as essential so one near you should be open. I would just use some moist cotton wool just to dab on it. Plenty of warm water should remove most of the dried blood. Don’t worry to much if you can’t get it all off. You don’t want to be taking off anymore skin. So if in any doubt leave it alone and just use the antiseptic spray.

i think the pigeon is getting really bored, maybe frustrated in the cage

if so so what you recommend from amazon uk?

No there isn’t anything. It will be fine just kept fed and watered.

How are the wounds healing?

Mate keep it warm ,Fed & watered well in a quite & safe place ,do as Andy as said ,they are very tough birds & with some loving from you hopefully will return to normal ,we has  pigeon fanciers have to put up with these attacks  all the time & it’s hard for us to take ,so your doing a great job ,a little trick we do out here ,is clean the sounds ,then  smear Vegimite or Marmite as you have over

there  wounds then leave to heal , cheers
