I have had that occasionally George. Especially if it was a pair that you paired together rather than the ones they chose. I had a pair last year that reared a youngster in the first round and just down on the second round when the cock went off with another hen that had lost her mate. Racing natural and when my birds are basketed on a Thursday morning, the ones left at home often leave their nest, and if the mate doesn’t return quickly they very soon repair with another in the loft.

The grass must be greener on the other side ,lol we don’t always know of the better matings ,just see how they go ,if the babies fly better than last year they were right , I like to change my matings each year ,to try & see ,if I have a dominate bird ,so I can then try to line breed with it , some pairs click others don’t , cheers Pray

Pigeons are funny things. So unpredictable. If not content with one mate they will soon find a new one. Is the cock the hen has gone off with a new addition to your loft George?

Was that last year? Is he just a yearling and the first year in the breeding loft?

The hen might just fancy him more lol.

It does make it very difficult though when you are hoping to breed from certain pairs.
