It is a good source of calcium. Never tried it myself but may try it. I would give it to them whole. It is used a lot for cage birds. Rather than for the calcium content it is mainly given to help grinding down the beaks to keep them in good order. Our tortoises use it too for the same reason, to keep the beak down.

I always used it for my cockatiels, budgies etc but never tried it on pigeons and we got some whilst in Devon and thought why not try it, we used to boil it then dry it out in oven before giving birds

We use to collect it as kids when we was up in Blackpool for my grandads birds! 

 

They used to go mad for it too!
